I graduated from community college with an AA in Art, which might not mean much on the job market, but it means something to me – it means I received some formal training on art history, technique, and appreciation. But I've seen artists on the internet receive way more attention for less-polished work, and I've noticed that the majority of these artists have something in common: they tend to be Social Justice Warriors, whereas I eschew that mentality.
This makes me wonder...is my art unpopular because of my personal sociopolitical standing, or is it visually unappealing? So I've decided to conduct a social experiment, of sorts – I'm going to take a random assortment of webcomics from known SJW artists and redraw them, panel by panel, pose by pose, in my own personal art style. I will post them on my art blog and link back to the originals for comparison (using the tag #SJWchallenge to keep track). I won't be making any money off of this, so this endeavor falls under fair use, but if any of the original artists want me to remove my affectionate parodies, I will do so if asked politely and tactfully.
I'm not expecting anyone else to try this out, but I fully welcome any other artists who want to do this #SJWchallenge. This ought to be interesting, if nothing else...
